10 things to avoid selecting an EMS provider

While selecting an outside manufacturing firm might seem like a daunting task, there are simple ways to make the transition as smooth as possible.

As the electronic, mechanical and industrial designs become more complex, so too does the need to bring products to market more quickly and efficiently. The main benefit of contract manufacturing offers a company is more time and resources to concentrate on other core competencies, such as sales, information management and marketing.

Deciding on which company to hand over a core function of your business can be intimidating, frustrating and time consuming. There are literally hundreds of specialized companies from which to choose. To make sure you get started on the right foot, let’s look at some things to avoid when choosing an EMS (Electronic manufacturing services) provider:

Mistake #1 EMS has no design experience

Many EMS and Contract manufacturers only do manufacturing. Not having design experience presents a problem when unexpected problems arise. Problems such at component end of life must be addressed by the original engineering team.

Mistake # 2 Manufacturing in China

Many companies are turning to China for contract manufacturing. The most common complaints are poor quality and the lack of communication. Many times the products are delivered with problems and it is very difficult to communicate the problem back to the manufacturer. Also the intellectual property is at jeopardy.

Mistake # 3 Going with the cheapest solution

When reviewing potential partners, It is not always best to go with the cheapest bid. A cheaper CM might mean poorer quality or fewer people on staff. Their product will be behind your label, so quality and quality-control measures should be higher priorities.

Mistake # 4 No local support

Many contract manufacturing companies offer attractive overseas solutions. Most overseas manufacturers only offer local reps. Always check that the company has fully staffed local offices.

Mistake # 5 No Quality Control Program

Make sure that your contract manufacturing has a rock-solid quality control program. Demand the highest standards and most rigorous quality assurance. This ensures that your products are safe, as well as meet all regulatory specifications.

Mistake # 6 No ISO 9001

Determine any certifications your product may require and make sure that those assurances are offered by the manufacturer. FDA, UL, CE and ISO 9001 are all positive marks of distinction, as they show the manufacturer’s commitment to the quality of their products.

Mistake # 7 No Regulatory (UL, CE and FDA) compliance certification

Determine any certifications your product may require and make sure that those assurances are offered by the manufacturer. FDA, UL, CE and ISO 9001 are all positive marks of distinction, as they show the manufacturer’s commitment to the quality of their products.

Mistake # 8 No Intellectual Property Security

Your company’s intellectual property—whether that’s patents, trade secrets or just employee know-how—may be more valuable than its physical assets.

Mistake # 9 No Cost Reduction Reviews

Cost is a very . …

Mistake # 10 No postproduction support and logistics services.
